Visit the Streetscape Carousels at: St Stephen's Chapel, West Norwood Cemetery, SE27 9JU Borough Market, SE1 1TL Portobello Green, W10 5TZ World's End Place, SW10 0DR Kentish Town Library, NW5 2AA The Streetscape Carousels are a series of 5 small, room–scale pavilions scattered around London for the duration of the Olympic and Paralympic Games 2012. Each Carousel relates uniquely to its area, showcasing its character through a display of its architecture: contemporary and historic buildings alongside landmarks of local importance, reflecting cultural and physical diversity and eclecticism. These selected architectures of different scales are collaged together in silhouetted form, and wrapped around the inside of a cylindrical drum, which is raised up on legs. By turning a crank, the layer of silhouettes can be made to rotate so that the entire panorama may be viewed from one position. At night, a central light illuminates the silhouette from the inside, projecting the silhouetted streetscape in light and shadow back onto its surroundings. The Carousels capture a snapshot of London’s continually transforming skyline by creating a physical record of the city at its seminal moment of hosting 2012 Olympic Games. Through enticing both visitors and Londoners to engage and interact with the streetscapes we wish them to observe more closely their real-life city surroundings. These collages of London, presented in an engaging, magical and captivating manner elevates normal and everyday street scenes into moments of wonder. By representing the city within an object, we want our pavilions to serve as a reminder that the city itself is an object of fascination.
